We’re moving, settling in, unpacking boxes, and three months later a tax notice arrives at the old address. The problem isn’t the postal service; it’s that the tax administration was never notified. To avoid this scenario, updating the address on impots.gouv.fr should be done quickly after the move, ideally before the next tax deadline.
Tax address and postal address on impots.gouv: a distinction to know
When we talk about changing an address for tax purposes, we often think of simply receiving mail. In reality, the declared address determines the public finance center to which we are assigned. Moving to another municipality can therefore lead to a change of public finance center, which alters the contact person for any questions regarding the declaration or withholding tax.
The update on impots.gouv.fr does not automatically propagate to other public bodies. A feedback report published on Services Publics+ in September 2026 shows that an address could be correct in the tax space but remain incorrect on a France Rénov’ account, blocking an identity verification file.
We better understand why knowing how to change an address on impots gouv is not always enough to cover all the administrative steps related to a move.

Changing your address on impots.gouv.fr: the concrete process in the personal space
The modification is done directly online, without a paper form to send. Here is the exact procedure once logged into the Public Finances space.
Access via profile
After identification (13-digit tax number + password, or via FranceConnect with an Ameli, La Poste, or MSA account), click on “My profile” at the top right. In the “My personal information / My contact methods” section, a “Modify” button appears under the displayed address.
Enter the new address and confirm. The “Postal address” field then displays “Your change of address is being processed”. A confirmation email is sent to the email address associated with the account.
Access via secure messaging
If the modification button poses a problem (cases reported after certain interface migrations), an alternative exists. From the homepage of the personal space, open secure messaging, then “Write” > “Change of situation” > “Change of postal address.” The guided form produces the same result.
Both paths lead to the same processing on the administration side. The choice mainly depends on what works on the day you log in.
Processing times and calendar traps on withholding
The change of address is not instantaneous. The DGFiP processes the request, and the time frame varies depending on the time of year. One point of caution concerns the monthly or due date withholding.
- A modification recorded before the last day of the month is taken into account from the withholding of the following month.
- In December, any change made after the 15th only takes effect in February of the following year. Therefore, one may receive mail or a notice sent to the old address in January.
- If moving between two municipalities linked to different centers, the file transfer may take a few additional weeks. During this period, feedback varies on this point, with some users reporting reminders sent to the old address despite the update being made.
For professionals using monthly withholding, changing the address of the contract is done through “Manage my direct debit contracts” in the professional space. You need to have the tax number and the direct debit contract number on hand.
When the online space is not enough: alternatives by phone and mail
Not all situations can be resolved in three clicks. A misspelled civil status, an address that the form refuses to recognize, or access blocked after site migration: these cases exist and are documented on Services Publics+.
The national number of the DGFiP
The 0 809 401 401 is the number to remember for individuals (free service except for call costs). It is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 7 PM. You can also make an appointment online with your public finance center via the dedicated page on impots.gouv.fr.
By postal mail
Write to the public finance center corresponding to the address on January 1 of the tax year. The letter must mention the tax number, the old address, and the new one. This option remains useful for people who do not have internet access or whose online account is temporarily inaccessible.

Vehicle registration, social benefits, housing: what the tax office does not update for you
As mentioned earlier: the tax update does not trigger any automatic synchronization with other administrations. After a move, it is necessary to report the change of address separately to each concerned organization.
- The vehicle registration must be updated within one month after the move, via the ANTS website.
- The CAF, CPAM, and pension funds each have their own online space to change the address.
- Housing-related services (France Rénov’, local aids) are not connected to the tax portal. An ongoing file may get blocked if the address does not match.
The online service “I am moving” on service-public.fr allows you to notify several organizations in a single step, but it does not cover all cases. Manually checking each space remains the most reliable method to avoid having a notice or reminder sent to the old address.
The best practice, ultimately, is to handle the tax address change first (because it determines the attachment to the correct public finance center), then go through the list of other organizations in the process. Waiting exposes you to lost mail and unnecessarily prolonged regularization times.
